Kids

I truly believed that the wave that was MGMT that permeated every dj set for nearly a year was long over and replaced by the likes of Passion Pit and La Roux. But this weekend I was proven wrong when I witnessed Toronto’s Keys N Krates open with a jam-band version of Kids and Million Dollar Mano incorporate the same tune into the intro of his set, which, if I may take the time to say so, was awesome despite his complete lack of stage presence. Last week, URB mag nominated Kids for Song of the Decade. Now don’t get me wrong, the song is good (okay, great), but this nomination leads me to question if URB has the same perverted fools working for them as Billboard, who recently nominated Nickelback for band of the decade (who were, in contrast, voted worst band in the world by the Uk’s Word magazine), rulling out other competitors like Jay Z and Beyonce. I never thought I would ever be given the chance to utter the name Nickelback on this site. Anyhow, I digress, I awoke this a.m. to find this semi-dubstep take on MGMT’s hit on Audioporn Central. I guess the wave simply retracted to build some strength. Or perhaps its the end of the year and people are feeling particularly nostalgic as they prepare themselves for the holidays. Either way, enjoy.

All 4 da kidz

Tonight is the NORML Christmas bash, All 4 da kidz! The annul event which doubles as a fundraiser by collecting donations and lightly used Winter coats for a suit of local charities is quite possibly my third favorite day of the year. This year’s line-up includes M.I.A.‘s tour Dj, Million Dolla Mano, T.dot’s Keys N Krates, Dj Seven:30 and DL Incognito. The night will also feature local superstars, Dj Drastik and Illo, who composed the mix below just for tonight’s festivities. The mix is packed full of tweaked holiday faves mashed up with some oldies, hip-hop and bmore. Enjoy!

6 degrees of sibling sensations

This past August I was pumped for seeing A-Trak side by side M.I.A.‘s bestie, Rye-Rye, but the girl had to go and get prego and cancelled her remaining tour dates. As I pondered who would make a great sub for the act I naturally considered Kid Sister, aka Melisa Young, ironically, the elder sister of J2K, aka Josh Young, one half of Chicago based duo, Flosstradamus. Alas, A-Track, little brother of Dave 1, aka David Macklovitch, vocals and guitarist of MTL based electrofunk duo, Chromeo, dawned the stage alone. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing the MTL native turned international sensation and exclusive Kanye DJ, can attest to the fact that the night was nevertheless something to bewonder (Aside from the fact that there was no air conditioning in the subterranean hot-box). Still, the whole experience left me wondering when the heck we would see the likes of kid Sis again. Her collabs with Tittsworth (who’s recent mix is a little bit of disappointment, if i may use this opportunity to say so) and Loudmouth West offered the Illinois born lyricist critical acclaim and made her into a near instant star in the minds of hipsters and collar-poppers alike.

Well she’s back. This past Tuesday, too much anticipation, kid Sister released Ultraviolet. The album contains past jams like Pro Nails and Control, and opens with the recent single, Right Hand Hi. I’m not sure Right Hand Hi will live up to the successes of the aforementioned hits but it is sure going to get more that your ear-drums shaking.

Under the Sheets

Ellie Goulding is signed to Neon Gold Records, along with Penguin Prison and Marina & The Diamonds, with whom she will be performing with on a portion of her current European tour. I’m not sure who is opening for who but her performances across the England will also feature the awesome and lovely Little Boots. Anyhow, I was recently introduced to her and while I’m not totally floored by her mostly mellow pop sound, as some are, Under the Sheets is simply fantastic! I’d place the song somewhere between the grooves of a Twelves remix of a Lykke Li tune and the indie vibe of Regina Spektor. If you ask me, I think this tune is a prime base for a Fred Falke remix.

Passion Pit LIVE tonight.

Passion Pithas has really risen above themselves. They band’s first EP, Chunk of Change, certainly did them well but their latest full-length studio album, Manners, which was released in May has shot them in with the rest of the indie big kids. They’ve been remixed by Calvin Harris, Miike Snow, Neon Coyote and Sammy Bananas, and they themselves have remixed the likes of the YYYs and Dan Black. They’ve managed to get themselves onto the roster of nearly every major festival in both NA and Europe and have garnered nearly 2000 blog posts in the last 6 months! And those are just the ones monitored by Elbo.ws.

After two failed attempts, Passion Pit will return to Ottawa tonight to play at Zaphods. Its an early show and a really nice day out in the nation’s capital so there is no reason not to tie this one this on evening as the summer winds to a close in a mere three weeks!

Slow down bullets and shooting stars.

I had the pleasure of catching the UK’s La Roux at MTL’s Oseaga Festival two weekends ago. She gave a killer performance despite the 35 degree heat and finsished with, as we might expect, Bulletproof. When I heard that the French master of the epic remixes, Fred Falke, had taken on this summer jam I was certain it’d be one of his best yet. You decide.

La Roux – Bulletproof (Fred Falke Rmx)

Sydney’s Chris Stracey and Jack Glass, aka Bag Raiders, who just finished their NA tour and I didn’t even come close to catching them, recently brought the release of the Shooting Stars single to their hometown. Kris Menace has toned the whole thing down in this slightly melodic but playful twist on the couple’s smash hit.

I’m sorry…

The death of Michael Jackson and my wireless card coupled with 2 major music festivals, Bluesfest and Osheaga, both of which afforded me very little if any sleep over the last month, on top of me living out of a back pack and acquiring new responisbilities  at the office has really impeded by ability to provide as much as attention as I would like to dystimulation and its fans – regular, sporadic and random. However, life is slowly restoring itself to normal and I can say with some degree of certainty that I am back and will begin my regular postings as the summer continues to wind down.

In light of the lack of sun and beach time my corner of the country has been experiencing, I see this Hey Champ mix as probably the most appropriate track to pass on at this time – perhaps a wish or prayer of sorts.

Wonder Wonderful

Since being discovered singing on a street corner at age 11 in 1961, Stevie Wonder has become one of the world’s greatest musical artists and social activists. JT, MJ, Jason Kay, Tupac, Prince, Barak Obama and a host of others have cited the 25-time Grammy-award winning artist as inspiration to their own successes. As one of the most sampled artists ever – sharing the stage with few others but James Brown and Michael Jackson – Wonder’s passionate lyrics and brilliant talents as an multi-instrumentalist have paved the electronic music scene through its capture of popular music in recent years. In nearly half a century Wonder has collaborated with best of the best from nearly every decade, including, B.B. King, Chaka Khan and Lenny Kravitz. I can only hope the duration of his life will be as mutually rewarding for us all.

I’ve been waiting my life to see/hear Mr. Wonder and though thunderstorms are forecast for Ottawa, MTL and pretty much the entire East coast, nothing Mother Nature can throw at me and my mates will stop us from seeing the FREE show Stevie is scheduled to play tonight at the opening of le Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, which is also a pre-inauguration for Montreal’s new Place de Festivals.

Unstoppable

Santogold_signHands Up

There is only one way to describe Santogold after the killer performance her, Amanda Blank and Spankrock gave the wild crowd in MTL Thursday, and I think she sums it up well in the track….

Good News!

After a long celebratory weekend packed full of rummage sales and races, I am back! Also good news: Swedish trio Miike Snow, whose self titled album drops June 9 but is currently available on US Itunes, has been added to the Oseaga line up! The schedule for the 2-day jam fest in Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau, also featuring the Beastie Boys, Coldplay, the Decemberists, Beast and Lykke Li, has yet to be released, which leads me to believe some other last minute acts are still to come.

Yeah, they’re coming! Yeah, they rock!! Yeah, heads will roll!!!

I awoke to some pleasing news yesterday, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are closing the show at this year’s Bluesfest! Just days ago I reviewed my summer 2009 festival and show line-up, which I think is shaping up quite nicely. The roster currently includes first time viewings of Santogold, Amanda Blank, Lykke Li, Cold Play, Beastie Boys, Beast, Neko Case and Holy F*ck!, and a slew of welcomed repeat acts like, Thunderheist, the Roots, Crystal Castles, Girltalk and maybe, if all goes well, Cut Copy. Following my review, I created a shortlist of acts I wanted to see and it just so happens to include the NYC indie sensations. I am pretty excited, mostly because I am still legitimately riding the high off their most recent album, It’s Blitz, which dropped back in March.

Heads Will Roll is pretty much my fave tune on the album. Here’s a taste of what others had to bring to it. If you ask me there appears to be a little it of a concensus on the alternative interpretation.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Lego Beat Dark Cuts Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (DIGIRAATII Dance Til You\’re Dead Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Young Live Starters Rmx)

Bonus!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric (Acoustic)

I admit that my first review of this year’s festival was a little brash, and the lineup is settling well with me as we get closer to the date, and with this addition of course. I maintain my belief that the year is a little weak in comparison to others but I am feeling a little more relaxed than I had initially.

This year’s Bluesfest runs from July 8-19. You can check the whole line-up here.

Millions of peaches, Peaches for FREE.

I’ve been a little neglectful lately as my focus has been on a report. My apologies. Anyhow, here it is, the new Peaches track, Talk to me. The Canadian producer, and queen of bitch and dirty lyrics has tour dates set for Vancity, Calgary, T.O., MTL and quite a few U.S. cities to promo her forthcoming album, I Love Cream, which is to be released May 4. Hop on over to the promo site to view a mini documentary full of all the twisted egoisms and gender bending you would expect of her.

Peaches – Talk to me

Also, head over to XLR8R where you can stream the entire album for FREE!
