Uffie and Amanda friend or foe?

In a mailbox post last month I remarked that Don Diablo‘s Larry Tee mix had a little bit of an Uffie/Amanda Blank feel to it without truly acknowledging what I had just implied. In hindsight, I think I may have unintentionally stumbled onto something here – a potential opportunity for collaboration, maybe? Or perhaps a new war amongst the hipster female lyricists? I hope so. How is it that I never connected the fact that two of the most famed and fem hipster-hoppers shared a number of similarities in their music? From their sampling of old skool hip-hop tracks, for which I am certain each were barely, if at all, alive to see in their hay days, to their associations with the scene’s biggest labels, Uffie with Ed Banger and Amanda with Downtown. I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. Blank open for fellow Downtowner, Santogold, last June but would pay some good money to witness Uffie and Amanda go at each other on stage (Just for kicks i’d like to throw Lilly Allen into the mix, as well).

Here’s a somewhat new one new one from the Uffster. I’m happy to see that she’s reviving herself beyond the embarassment of the whole Hollertronix Message Board episode from two years ago,

Uffie – MCs can kiss

And here’s two remixes of Blank’s, Shame On Me, a particular fave of mine off her most recent album, I Love You.

Amanda Blank – Shame on Me (Yuksek Rmx)
Amanda Blank – Shame on Me (Jacknife Lee Extended Rmx)

Mailbox

Its been sometime since I’ve done a mailbox post, mostly because I’ve been neglectful of the inbox and skim only for familiar or particularly intriguing material. Anyhow, these Don Diablo mixes were dropped in the inbox this week. The first bears a little bit of an Uffie/Amanda Blank feel to it, while the Scanners mix is a little bit different that what we’ve come to expect of the scene’s most recent king of bass. Mr Diablo is cruising the USA at present on his NA Tour. If he happens to stop by your town be sure not to miss the show.

Larry Tee – Let’s Make Nasty (Don Diablo Rmx)
Scanners – Salvation (Don Diablo Rmx)

Unstoppable

Santogold_signHands Up

There is only one way to describe Santogold after the killer performance her, Amanda Blank and Spankrock gave the wild crowd in MTL Thursday, and I think she sums it up well in the track….

Yeah, they’re coming! Yeah, they rock!! Yeah, heads will roll!!!

I awoke to some pleasing news yesterday, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are closing the show at this year’s Bluesfest! Just days ago I reviewed my summer 2009 festival and show line-up, which I think is shaping up quite nicely. The roster currently includes first time viewings of Santogold, Amanda Blank, Lykke Li, Cold Play, Beastie Boys, Beast, Neko Case and Holy F*ck!, and a slew of welcomed repeat acts like, Thunderheist, the Roots, Crystal Castles, Girltalk and maybe, if all goes well, Cut Copy. Following my review, I created a shortlist of acts I wanted to see and it just so happens to include the NYC indie sensations. I am pretty excited, mostly because I am still legitimately riding the high off their most recent album, It’s Blitz, which dropped back in March.

Heads Will Roll is pretty much my fave tune on the album. Here’s a taste of what others had to bring to it. If you ask me there appears to be a little it of a concensus on the alternative interpretation.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Lego Beat Dark Cuts Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (DIGIRAATII Dance Til You\’re Dead Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Young Live Starters Rmx)

Bonus!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric (Acoustic)

I admit that my first review of this year’s festival was a little brash, and the lineup is settling well with me as we get closer to the date, and with this addition of course. I maintain my belief that the year is a little weak in comparison to others but I am feeling a little more relaxed than I had initially.

This year’s Bluesfest runs from July 8-19. You can check the whole line-up here.

Amanda Blank!

Philly’s female misogynist, Amanda Blank, is nothing short of amazing. Her solo tracks, which have been produced by the likes of Spank Rock and Pace Rock are urban but playful, her collabs with queens of all things cool, M.I.A. and Santogold redefine the role of women in the hipster-hop and her style, well look at her. I’ve not yet seen her live but hope to grab the chance when she hits either the MTL or TO stage with Santogold in early June. Blank’s debut album I Love Youdrops July 14th and is produced by the sensational Diplo, Switch and XXXChange!

Amanda Blank – Might like you better
Britney Spears – Gimme More (Eli/Grayson Mix feat Amanda Blank)
Santogold – I’m a lady (Diplo Rmx feat. Amanda Blank)
Paul Simon – 50 Ways feat. Amanda Blank (Chipset & Devlin Rmx)

For all you Ottawa folk, rumours are flying that Paul Simonis slated to play this year’s Cisco Bluesfest!!!!
