Off to Aussie

A friend of mine is off to Australia tomorrow so I figured I’d put together a shortlist of my fave Aussie artists. In no particular order, here you go:

Bertie Blackman – Black Cats (Shazam Rmx)
New Young Pony Club – Ice Cream (Van She Tech Rmx)
Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream
Cut Copy – Lights and Music
Sia – Buttons
Bag Raiders – Shooting Stars
Ladyhawke – Paris is Burning

And yes, i am fully aware that Ladyhawke is from New Zealand. I ignorantly couple her with the Aussie kids out of mere proximity to the rest of the gang. I’m sorry if I’ve offended anyone by this.

Another Aussie kid to love.

Bertie Blackman is an Aussie and I like her. Surprised? Not I. I’ve professed my love for the acts from down under countless times. Cut Copy, PNAU, Empire of the Sun, Kylie Minogue, The Galvatrons, Ladyhawke (she is from New Zealand but whatever), Bag Raiders….whao! Anyhow, back to Blackman. The girl has been on the scene and working her way to the top for some time now and I expect that we’ll be seeing much more of her with producer Lee Groves (Goldfrapp, Gwen Stefani) behind her newest album, Secrets and Lies, which was released last April.

Here’s two remixes I came by recently that prompted my new found love for the Aussie chick. She kind of reminds me of Karen O.

Bertie Blackman – Black Cats (Shazam Rmx)
Bertie Blackman – Black Cats (Calling in Sick Rmx)

On a side note, did anyone else read that Karen O stole Miley Cyrus’s Grammy nomination?!?! Um, amazing! You can read the story here.

Karen O – All is love (My!Gay!Husband! Rmx)

p.s. Much like yesterday’s reference to Nickelback, I certainly never imagined that Miley Cyrus would have a place on this blog.

Disco Disco Dancer

Unlike most of the blogging community, I’ve not fallen in love with the Golden Filter. Recently, the NYC duo’s track, Thunderbird, and its accompanying video recieved rave reviews throughout the blogosphere but still, I felt little, if any excitement by its hype. I wouldn’t dare deny them the successes of their hard work or belittle their innovative style and production skills; in fact, they’ve come out with some pretty good, though generally safe and mellow, remixes of hits like Cut Copy‘s, Far Away, and Little Boots‘, New in Town (I especially like the piano stint towards the end). I’ve just never really been moved by any of their originals (…yet).

The Golden Filter’s take on O Children’s dark indie track, Disco Disco Dancer, elevates the song’s original tribal sound without making it cheesy and provides the track with a more uplifting sound as it progresses. Two Thumbs up.

Yeah, they’re coming! Yeah, they rock!! Yeah, heads will roll!!!

I awoke to some pleasing news yesterday, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are closing the show at this year’s Bluesfest! Just days ago I reviewed my summer 2009 festival and show line-up, which I think is shaping up quite nicely. The roster currently includes first time viewings of Santogold, Amanda Blank, Lykke Li, Cold Play, Beastie Boys, Beast, Neko Case and Holy F*ck!, and a slew of welcomed repeat acts like, Thunderheist, the Roots, Crystal Castles, Girltalk and maybe, if all goes well, Cut Copy. Following my review, I created a shortlist of acts I wanted to see and it just so happens to include the NYC indie sensations. I am pretty excited, mostly because I am still legitimately riding the high off their most recent album, It’s Blitz, which dropped back in March.

Heads Will Roll is pretty much my fave tune on the album. Here’s a taste of what others had to bring to it. If you ask me there appears to be a little it of a concensus on the alternative interpretation.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Lego Beat Dark Cuts Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (DIGIRAATII Dance Til You\’re Dead Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Young Live Starters Rmx)

Bonus!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric (Acoustic)

I admit that my first review of this year’s festival was a little brash, and the lineup is settling well with me as we get closer to the date, and with this addition of course. I maintain my belief that the year is a little weak in comparison to others but I am feeling a little more relaxed than I had initially.

This year’s Bluesfest runs from July 8-19. You can check the whole line-up here.

Letters from Australia

My love-professing post on OZ the other day have and the many posts on Aussie kids like Empire of the Sun and Cut Copy have made it pretty evident that I am blown away by the talents of the land down under. Australian Dj and producer, Dj Sexwax, dropped these Cut Copy and Ladyhawke mixes in my inbox yesterday and I couldn’t help but offer ’em up to you! The Back of the Vanedit is undeniably killer – its 80’s synth/electro pop addition will make any heart palpitate. And well, pretty much any Cut Copy mix is sure to get me fired up – especially one with an oldskool breakbeat sample or two!

Ladyhawke – Back of the Van (Sexwax Rmx)
Cut Copy – Far Away (Sexwax Rmx)

Hop over to his Myspace for a dope mix of Spankrock‘s Put That Pussy On Me.

The saga continues….Cut Copy and Fleetwood Mac, together again.

Anyone who has popped by here once in the last month or so is well aware of my love for Cut Copy and Fleetwood Mac, and that I was elated to discover that chance would permit me to see both in one weekend.

Well who knew that Cut Copy liked Fleetwood Mac?!?!?…and that Parisian remix master Lifelike would support this union? Whao!

Dear Australia, I Love you.

I would really like to know what it is about Australia that inspires so many great acts, Cut Copy, PNAU, Empire of the Sun, Kylie Minogue, The Galvatrons, Ladyhawke(though she is from New Zealand but I am sure she shares similar ‘down under’ influences) and today’s post, Bag Raiders. Perhaps its the mega amounts of sun they receive, their proximity to Asia, or maybe their isolation (geographically) from the rest of the world – I am note sure. What I do know is that somehow the world down under keeps producing some pretty novel sounds.

Bag Raiders have a pretty solid sound – somewhere between Justice and Miami Horror, but its their remixing abilities that I give them the most praise for.

The originals:
Bag Raiders – Shooting Stars

And their best remixes:
Cut Copy – Far Away (Bag Raiders Rmx)
The Galvatrons – When we were kids (Bag Raiders Rmx)

Their going in for the Kill!

England’s electropop duo, La Roux, releases their second single today! Their first single Quicksand was released in late November 2008 on the French label, Kitsune, (which also represents the likes of Fred Falke, Crystal Castles, Cut Copy and so many other amazing electro talent), and was a smashing success. In for the kill has be well primed for its release in effect of the multiple remixes crafted following its leak a while back, including ones by Hostage, Skream and the Twelves. The rest of the album is sure to garner them huge success over the next year.

Countdown to Cut Copy – 7 Sleeps.

This is it, the last stretch. I’ve yet to develop that child-like anxious feeling but I’m sure to be subject to it any day now. Simply writing this post is getting me more excited for the show…and moments closer.

So this is Christmas.

prize-winner1I think by my age, 25, we have all realized that its not the gifts that christmas is about, its the nap/moment alone we all get following what is probably the best meal of the year.

As i layed down for my nap moments ago, I had a rush of memory bursts all acompanied by great music which yanked me from my tryptophan induced coma.

John Lennon – Happy Christmas

Cut Copy has made what I am willing to say might be the farthest stride of all the indie/electro/pop bands of this year. I would like to personally wish them a Merry Christmas. While I have yet to hear one of their songs on mainstream radio like we saw with neo-electro legends Chromeo, their album, In Ghost Colors, released in April of this year with obvious leaks months prior, is sure to bring them far into the new year. Its hard to predict their future, but I suspect their success has hardly been humbling and we can expect to see another one come the end of their touring in the late spring of 2009.

Until then, lets be happy with what we got. Merry Christmas!
