Music and other modern musings

Dear YouTube, Thank you for giving me a such a great method of procrastination. xo Sandy

I came by this simple alternate video of Lykke‘s Breaking It Up while procrastinating just now. Enjoy.

And who doesn’t love a modern (perhaps late night drunken hotel) take on this Louis Armstrong classic???

Yes, I will love you tomorrow

Will you still love me tomorrow was written by Gerry Goffin and the great Carole King – the duo that also brought us the Loco-motion and Natural Woman. The ballad was originally recorded by The Shirelles and topped most major charts in 1961. Since then, it has been recorded by many great acts, including Ben E King, Laura Branigan, The Four Seasons and King herself. More recently, the song was recorded by Amy Winehouse and we now have another great performer to add to list, Lykke Li.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I have a great love for the swedish born beaut. Everything about her drives me absolutely nuts. Her voice paralyzes me, while her lyrics inspire me. The tune may not be a Li original but she does one hell of a job to make it her own. Bravo! I must admit that while Lykke’s version is sad as hell, so much that listening to it makes me want to rip my heart out, its done so well I just can’t stop myself from going back for more.

Lykki Li – Will you still love me tomorrow

Another great cover of Li’s is her take on Tribe Called Quest’s Can I kick it. The girl can throw a rhyme better than most new hip hoppers today!

Under the Sheets

Ellie Goulding is signed to Neon Gold Records, along with Penguin Prison and Marina & The Diamonds, with whom she will be performing with on a portion of her current European tour. I’m not sure who is opening for who but her performances across the England will also feature the awesome and lovely Little Boots. Anyhow, I was recently introduced to her and while I’m not totally floored by her mostly mellow pop sound, as some are, Under the Sheets is simply fantastic! I’d place the song somewhere between the grooves of a Twelves remix of a Lykke Li tune and the indie vibe of Regina Spektor. If you ask me, I think this tune is a prime base for a Fred Falke remix.

Good News!

After a long celebratory weekend packed full of rummage sales and races, I am back! Also good news: Swedish trio Miike Snow, whose self titled album drops June 9 but is currently available on US Itunes, has been added to the Oseaga line up! The schedule for the 2-day jam fest in Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau, also featuring the Beastie Boys, Coldplay, the Decemberists, Beast and Lykke Li, has yet to be released, which leads me to believe some other last minute acts are still to come.

Aoki’s Gifted.

As if N.A.S.A. (Dj Squeak E. Clean & Dj Zegon) hadn’t done a good enough job when they aligned Kanye, Santogold and Lykke Li for Gifted, Mr. Aoki had to come along and ante up! Bravo Steve. Bravo!

Yeah, they’re coming! Yeah, they rock!! Yeah, heads will roll!!!

I awoke to some pleasing news yesterday, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are closing the show at this year’s Bluesfest! Just days ago I reviewed my summer 2009 festival and show line-up, which I think is shaping up quite nicely. The roster currently includes first time viewings of Santogold, Amanda Blank, Lykke Li, Cold Play, Beastie Boys, Beast, Neko Case and Holy F*ck!, and a slew of welcomed repeat acts like, Thunderheist, the Roots, Crystal Castles, Girltalk and maybe, if all goes well, Cut Copy. Following my review, I created a shortlist of acts I wanted to see and it just so happens to include the NYC indie sensations. I am pretty excited, mostly because I am still legitimately riding the high off their most recent album, It’s Blitz, which dropped back in March.

Heads Will Roll is pretty much my fave tune on the album. Here’s a taste of what others had to bring to it. If you ask me there appears to be a little it of a concensus on the alternative interpretation.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Lego Beat Dark Cuts Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (DIGIRAATII Dance Til You\’re Dead Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Young Live Starters Rmx)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric (Acoustic)

I admit that my first review of this year’s festival was a little brash, and the lineup is settling well with me as we get closer to the date, and with this addition of course. I maintain my belief that the year is a little weak in comparison to others but I am feeling a little more relaxed than I had initially.

This year’s Bluesfest runs from July 8-19. You can check the whole line-up here.

Old news can be good news.

I’m a little late on this one but better late than never.

In the summer of 2007, I think most us were insanely excited in a dense cloud of disbelief to hear of Sam Spiegel (Dj Squeak E. Clean) and Dj Zegon‘s project N.A.S.A. – North America/South America. The appropriately titled project links the sounds and famed faces of the North and South to form a remarkable album of somewhat unimaginable collaborations; Tom Waits, M.I.A., George Clinton, Kanye, Lykke Li, Spank Rock, SantoGold, RZA, the YYY’s, Red Hot Chili Peppers and even Seu Jorge…Whao! If you’ve not heard the album, Spirit of Apollo, which dropped mid-February, I would highly recommend you do so now. Each track is like a 3-5 minute mental trip to Coachella.

Could there be a better combo than the one we have here?

N.A.S.A. – Gifted feat. Kanye West, Santogold, Lykke Li

FYI – Spiegel is reportedly working on a film detailing the N.A.S.A. project with older bother, Spike Jonze.

Coachella one day away. Me, miles away.

Today I learned Portugal’s masters of Kuduro, Buraka Som Sistema, are not only performing at Coachella but they are reportedly embarking on a mini North American tour with Dj Sega following the epic summer festival (tour dates below). I have little to no chance of attending either event. FML.

I suppose I will have to settle for endless hours of youtube vids such as this one:

My consolation for missing so many great acts in one spot will remain the wildly cheap but invigorating videos as the one above and the great mixes comprising multiple missed acts as this one below. Is there any sound Lykke Li can’t be mixed to?

Lykke Li – Dance Dance Dance (Buraka Som Sistema Edit)

I’m hoping to finally catch a Lykke Li live at this year’s Osheaga Festival.

Dj Sega/Buraka Som Sistema tour dates:

17 Indio, CA Coachella
21 San Francisco, CA Rickshaw Stop
23 Portland, OR Rotture
24 Vancouver, BC Biltmore
25 Seattle, WA Nectar Lounge
28 Chicago, IL Sonotehque
29 Toronto, ON El Mocambo
30 Montreal, QC Zoobiziarre

01 Boston,MA Harpers
02 New York, NY Bowery Ballroom

The french front-runner, Fred Falke

French house producer/Dj, Fred Falke, is truly a master in his own art. In his decade-long career he’s worked with big-wigs like Alan Braxe and Khris Menace, and never seems to let me down with his ability to renew über popular tracks, turning them into something completely novel for a second time around.

Ladyhawke – Back of the Van (Fred Falke Rmx)
Lykke Li – Im Good, Im Gone (Fred Falke Rmx)
Hot Chip – Colors (Fred Falke Rmx)
Whitest Boy Alive – Golden Cage (Fred Falke Rmx)
Little Boots – New In Town (Fred Falke Rmx)

Mickey Facts – A little bit more.

Here is yet another remix of Lykke Li‘s, Little Bit. The Bronx born producer/dj/b-boy, Mickey Factz, adds a little bit of a masculine touch to Lykke’s debut track alongside Toronto’s, Drake.

As a bonus, here is the track that introduced me to Mickey Factz.

Mickey Factz – Automatic ft. Curtis Santiago

Keep your ears peeled for Mickey’s third instalment of The Leak. You can grab Vol. 1 here and Vol. 2 here.

Blast ’em

I’ve just waken from a mid-late evening nap and have found myself to be a little restless. I am going to blast some tunes, jam about while I pretend to put away some clothes and hopefully tire myself out and hit the hay. If not for today, grab these tracks for the next time your looking to let lose a little and blast ’em….as loud as you can.

Santogold – Creator (Switch Rmx)
Lykke Li – Little Bit (Diego chavez Rmx)

2nd best.

wal-mart-with-pride1As I understand it the weekend prior to Christmas is the biggest shopping day of the year and today, boxing day, is the second biggest, but probably the most dangerous. The big sales are frightening and do something to people comparable to being inflicted with an alien strain of rabies. I suggest as you pack your enviro-sacs with gifts to return you consider bringing a discreet weapon and stock your new Ipod Touch with some serious audio-distraction to keep you from being enraged and infected.

Friendly Fires – I\’m Good, I\’m Gone (Lykke Li Cover) (zshare)

Katy Perry – Electric Feel (MGMT Cover) (zshare)

Vampire Weekend – Everywhere (Fleetwood Mac Cover)
