Another Aussie kid to love.

Bertie Blackman is an Aussie and I like her. Surprised? Not I. I’ve professed my love for the acts from down under countless times. Cut Copy, PNAU, Empire of the Sun, Kylie Minogue, The Galvatrons, Ladyhawke (she is from New Zealand but whatever), Bag Raiders….whao! Anyhow, back to Blackman. The girl has been on the scene and working her way to the top for some time now and I expect that we’ll be seeing much more of her with producer Lee Groves (Goldfrapp, Gwen Stefani) behind her newest album, Secrets and Lies, which was released last April.

Here’s two remixes I came by recently that prompted my new found love for the Aussie chick. She kind of reminds me of Karen O.

Bertie Blackman – Black Cats (Shazam Rmx)
Bertie Blackman – Black Cats (Calling in Sick Rmx)

On a side note, did anyone else read that Karen O stole Miley Cyrus’s Grammy nomination?!?! Um, amazing! You can read the story here.

Karen O – All is love (My!Gay!Husband! Rmx)

p.s. Much like yesterday’s reference to Nickelback, I certainly never imagined that Miley Cyrus would have a place on this blog.

Yeah, they’re coming! Yeah, they rock!! Yeah, heads will roll!!!

I awoke to some pleasing news yesterday, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are closing the show at this year’s Bluesfest! Just days ago I reviewed my summer 2009 festival and show line-up, which I think is shaping up quite nicely. The roster currently includes first time viewings of Santogold, Amanda Blank, Lykke Li, Cold Play, Beastie Boys, Beast, Neko Case and Holy F*ck!, and a slew of welcomed repeat acts like, Thunderheist, the Roots, Crystal Castles, Girltalk and maybe, if all goes well, Cut Copy. Following my review, I created a shortlist of acts I wanted to see and it just so happens to include the NYC indie sensations. I am pretty excited, mostly because I am still legitimately riding the high off their most recent album, It’s Blitz, which dropped back in March.

Heads Will Roll is pretty much my fave tune on the album. Here’s a taste of what others had to bring to it. If you ask me there appears to be a little it of a concensus on the alternative interpretation.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Lego Beat Dark Cuts Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (DIGIRAATII Dance Til You\’re Dead Rmx)
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (Young Live Starters Rmx)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric (Acoustic)

I admit that my first review of this year’s festival was a little brash, and the lineup is settling well with me as we get closer to the date, and with this addition of course. I maintain my belief that the year is a little weak in comparison to others but I am feeling a little more relaxed than I had initially.

This year’s Bluesfest runs from July 8-19. You can check the whole line-up here.

Old news can be good news.

I’m a little late on this one but better late than never.

In the summer of 2007, I think most us were insanely excited in a dense cloud of disbelief to hear of Sam Spiegel (Dj Squeak E. Clean) and Dj Zegon‘s project N.A.S.A. – North America/South America. The appropriately titled project links the sounds and famed faces of the North and South to form a remarkable album of somewhat unimaginable collaborations; Tom Waits, M.I.A., George Clinton, Kanye, Lykke Li, Spank Rock, SantoGold, RZA, the YYY’s, Red Hot Chili Peppers and even Seu Jorge…Whao! If you’ve not heard the album, Spirit of Apollo, which dropped mid-February, I would highly recommend you do so now. Each track is like a 3-5 minute mental trip to Coachella.

Could there be a better combo than the one we have here?

N.A.S.A. – Gifted feat. Kanye West, Santogold, Lykke Li

FYI – Spiegel is reportedly working on a film detailing the N.A.S.A. project with older bother, Spike Jonze.

Imgine that.

So as I am prepping my departure from Thunderheist‘s remarkable show at the MTL’s Club Soda on Saturday night I receive a text from another friend of mine offering me and my mate VIP entrance to MSTRKRFT‘s album release party at the Metropolis so long as I could get there quick. Conveniently for me and my long-time mate, we were right across the street. Imagine that – Thunderheist and MSTRKRFT in one night. Whoa!

Neither show was better than the other, I mean the two acts are hardly comparable. That said, each show was a bass pounding, hands in the air frenzy! Fist of God is an understated metaphore to express the hold MSTRKRFT had over its crowd; and need I say something similar about Greg and Isis? – I think not. It goes without saying they thier performace stole the hearts and asses of all in attendance from the initial drop.

Here’s a tune off MSTRKRFT’s new album, Fist of God;

MSTRKRFT – Heartbreaker feat. John Legend

And here’s a bonus rmx thats been making its float about the blogs recently,

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (MSTRKRFT Rmx)

p.s. I really wanted to post MSTRKRFT’s Bounce Feat. N.O.R.E. and Thunderheist’s, Isis but am at work and don’t have access to my database so I am required to exploite the links of others. You can grab the Bounce and see pics from the MSTRKRFT show here.

Yeah, its bliss!

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs third album is being released over a month ahead of schedule due to an internet leak a couple of weeks ago. It’s Blitz!, origionally slated to release April 13, will be released worldwide digitally on March 9, and will be available in US stores March 31 and elsehwere April 6. Hysteric and Heads Will Roll are my two faves from what I have heard so far. I think this album will show their versatility and put their simple days of one voice, one guitar and one drum set to rest. The album seems more polished, and synths and other electronic sounds play an integral part in this new album as can be taken from the opening track, Zero (not included as I am not the biggest fan). I suspect It’s Blitz! will be their biggest success yet.
