you’ve changed

Sia, who performed the vocals on Lauren Flax’s, You’ve Changed, is back with her own take on the tune that was so well-loved about 2 years back now. She adds her quirky coolness and a little bit of a disco clap. I love it.

6 degrees of sibling sensations

This past August I was pumped for seeing A-Trak side by side M.I.A.’s bestie, Rye-Rye, but the girl had to go and get prego and cancelled her remaining tour dates. As I pondered who would make a great sub for the act I naturally considered Kid Sister, aka Melisa Young, ironically, the elder sister of J2K, aka Josh Young, one half of Chicago based duo, Flosstradamus. Alas, A-Track, little brother of Dave 1, aka David Macklovitch, vocals and guitarist of MTL based electrofunk duo, Chromeo, dawned the stage alone. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing the MTL native turned international sensation and exclusive Kanye DJ, can attest to the fact that the night was nevertheless something to bewonder (Aside from the fact that there was no air conditioning in the subterranean hot-box). Still, the whole experience left me wondering when the heck we would see the likes of kid Sis again. Her collabs with Tittsworth (who’s recent mix is a little bit of disappointment, if i may use this opportunity to say so) and Loudmouth West offered the Illinois born lyricist critical acclaim and made her into a near instant star in the minds of hipsters and collar-poppers alike.

Well she’s back. This past Tuesday, too much anticipation, kid Sister released Ultraviolet. The album contains past jams like Pro Nails and Control, and opens with the recent single, Right Hand Hi. I’m not sure Right Hand Hi will live up to the successes of the aforementioned hits but it is sure going to get more that your ear-drums shaking.

Green Pink Caviar

New York based artist Marilyn Minter is back at it again. After what seems like almost too long of a time since her 2005 exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which focused on “hyperrealistic close-ups of seemingly glamorous images, including makeup-laden lips, eyes, and toes” (her words) and received rave reviews, Minter has returned with similar themes in Green Pink Caviar.

Green Pink Caviar is a short film focused on Minter’s fascination with the body and pop culture, and while there is no explicit nudity, this, as well as her other work, is quite sensational and raunchy. From what I’ve gathered, It (appropriately?) debuted when Madonna kicked off her Sticky & Sweet tour on July 4th in London. Madge opened the evening with her new hit “Candy Shop,” and performed under a multi-screen installation of an edited version the film.

I’ll sum up by saying the work is simply vibrant! I’ve not seen the complete film but even the stills are sensual in every way!

You can catch the trailer of Green Pink Caviar here.

Under the Sheets

Ellie Goulding is signed to Neon Gold Records, along with Penguin Prison and Marina & The Diamonds, with whom she will be performing with on a portion of her current European tour. I’m not sure who is opening for who but her performances across the England will also feature the awesome and lovely Little Boots. Anyhow, I was recently introduced to her and while I’m not totally floored by her mostly mellow pop sound, as some are, Under the Sheets is simply fantastic! I’d place the song somewhere between the grooves of a Twelves remix of a Lykke Li tune and the indie vibe of Regina Spektor. If you ask me, I think this tune is a prime base for a Fred Falke remix.

aNYway

Duck Sauce, the collab between MTL native A-Trak and Boston born Armand Van Helden, is simply amazing. Their label, Fools Gold, which was founded by A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs, stated on thier blog that they sought to  ”craft brand new bangers in the spirit of their favorite vintage disco house tunes, keeping the good vibes intact while adding that 2009 club knock”

Here’s the first single, aNYway, off the “Greatest Hits” EP released this past September. There’s certainly some MJ-disco influence going on here.

On this day in….

1990, Producers confirmed that Milli Vanilli did not sing on their album…but they did dance in their videos, right? Right!?!??!

Wake Up!

I’ve been incredibly neglectful of over the course of the last couple of months, posting sporadically almost out of obligation but now I’m ready to wake up and get back to it. My computer is functioning again and I can’t think of a better wake up call than this wicked track by the city of angels duo, Acid Girls (who, if you don’t already know, aren’t girls at all) and Britain’s pop sensation, Frankmusik. I heard it just yesterday for the first time and was immediately floored. I hope you feel the same.

Passion Pit LIVE tonight.

Passion Pithas has really risen above themselves. They band’s first EP, Chunk of Change, certainly did them well but their latest full-length studio album, Manners, which was released in May has shot them in with the rest of the indie big kids. They’ve been remixed by Calvin Harris, Miike Snow, Neon Coyote and Sammy Bananas, and they themselves have remixed the likes of the YYYs and Dan Black. They’ve managed to get themselves onto the roster of nearly every major festival in both NA and Europe and have garnered nearly 2000 blog posts in the last 6 months! And those are just the ones monitored by Elbo.ws.

After two failed attempts, Passion Pit will return to Ottawa tonight to play at Zaphods. Its an early show and a really nice day out in the nation’s capital so there is no reason not to tie this one this on evening as the summer winds to a close in a mere three weeks!

Slow down bullets and shooting stars.

I had the pleasure of catching the UK’s La Roux at MTL’s Oseaga Festival two weekends ago. She gave a killer performance despite the 35 degree heat and finsished with, as we might expect, Bulletproof. When I heard that the French master of the epic remixes, Fred Falke, had taken on this summer jam I was certain it’d be one of his best yet. You decide.

Sydney’s Chris Stracey and Jack Glass, aka Bag Raiders, who just finished their NA tour and I didn’t even come close to catching them, recently brought the release of the Shooting Stars single to their hometown. Kris Menace has toned the whole thing down in this slightly melodic but playful twist on the couple’s smash hit.

Best remix EVER!…

…or so Frankmusik said in a recent interview:

”I would like to say personally that this is the best remix i have ever had done by anyone. You always deliver solid amazing dance floor fillers but this raises the bar”

I’m not sure I would go quite that far, but I would agree that Russ Chimes takes Frank’s Brit-pop tune and turns it into an epic end of summer hit.

I’m sorry…

The death of Michael Jackson and my wireless card coupled with 2 major music festivals, Bluesfest and Osheaga, both of which afforded me very little if any sleep over the last month, on top of me living out of a back pack and acquiring new responisbilities  at the office has really impeded by ability to provide as much as attention as I would like to dystimulation and its fans - regular, sporadic and random. However, life is slowly restoring itself to normal and I can say with some degree of certainty that I am back and will begin my regular postings as the summer continues to wind down.

In light of the lack of sun and beach time my corner of the country has been experiencing, I see this Hey Champ mix as probably the most appropriate track to pass on at this time – perhaps a wish or prayer of sorts.
